Palmistry was a well-developed science in ancient India. In Sanskrit, Palmistry is called as Hasta Samudrika, a branch of “ Samudrika Shastra “, namely the study of Signs & Proportional formation of various visible organs of the human body.
Hindu Mythology traces the origins of “Samudrika Shastra”
Hindu Mythology traces the origins of “ Samudrika Shastra” to the technique of “Anga Vidya” which was first invented by Samudra : The Lord of the Seas and hence the name “ Samudrika Shastra”. Lord Hanuman possessed knowledge of “Samudrika Shastra”. When identifying Sri Rama to Sita devi in Lanka, Lord Hanuman identified Sri Rama with Trivali (three foldings in the skin) in his neck and stomach, which are signs found on the King of Kings.
Prehistoric period of the Aryan civilisation
The ancient monuments of India takes us back to the prehistoric period of the Aryan civilisation. Among the Hindu sages who propagated this art , include Garga, Gautama, Bharadwaja, Agastya, Bhrigu, Atri and Kashyapa. It is mentioned in the Puranas that the divine sage, Narada, practised this art. Narada always professed that a person having signs like Vajra, Dhwaja or Shanku on the soles of his feet becomes an Emperor.

Maharshi Valmiki is reported to have written a book entitled " The Teachings of Valmiki Maharshi on Male Palmistry”, comprising 567 stanzas, about 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Samudrik Shastra, Ravana Samhita and Hasth Sanjeevani are some of the famous ancient books on Palmistry. In North West India , Palmistry was practised by Joshi Brahmins from ancient times.

In ancient times, gypsies practised Palmistry in Europe and America. In Europe due to the dominance of the Church, any practice which challenged God by delineating future was called as Devil’s act and was prohibited. However during 15th to 18th century some research was carried on, in Europe and other Western countries. Later on, during 19th to 20th century when the dominance of Church was diluted and due to the emergence of scientific thought, the subject Palmistry developed rapidly. Some of the notable contributors of the west are Desberrolles, William Benham, Saint Germain and Cheiro.
