Yogini Ekadashi

Yogini Ekadashi holds great religious and spiritual significance for Hindus. It is believed that observing fast on this day ensures good health, wealth and prosperity.

Lord Vishnu is the principle deity to be worshipped and propitiated during the rituals of the day. Also, worshipping the Pipal tree on this day is considered highly auspicious.

As per Hindu calendar, Yogini Ekadashi falls in the month of Ashadha of Krishna Paksha, which is the month of June or July, according to the English calendar. The fasting starts from the previous night of Ekadashi stretching over the day of Ekadashi and concludes on the next day of Ekadashi. Thus, the total time span of the vrat is approximately 36 hours, making it one of the toughest vrats observed.

It is mentioned in the Puranas that Yogini Ekadashi has a strong effect on a person’s life who observes it with true dedication and devotion. This fast is believed to remove all the sins of a devotee and ensure him a blissful life. The fast comes once every year and offers the boons equivalent to feeding 80,000 Brahmins.

During the fast, one cannot consume cereals or grains. He/she needs to wake up before the sunrise. It is important that the person stays away from every sin, and keep his body and mind clean. Also, the devotee needs to remain awake during the night and pray to Lord Vishnu for good health.
