According to Vedic Hindu calendar, Shravan maas begins when the Sun enters the Leo zodiac sign. Shravan Maas (month) is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered very auspicious. It is believed that when a devotee appeases Lord Shiva in the month of Shravan, all his desires get fulfilled.
Shivratri that falls in the month of Sawan or Shravana is known as Shravan Shivratri. This Shivratri is considered very poise and the devotees of Lord Shiva hold special prayers to appease their almighty. This year, it is being observed on 9th August 2018.
People conduct special processions known as Kavad yatra during the Shravan and conclude when people they pour Ganga Jal on the Linga form of Lord Shiva on the eve of Shivratri. During this month, devotees also observe fast and chant Shiva mantra.
The legend says that during the phase of Samudra Manthan, plenty of things came out which were distributed among the gods and demons. There were certain undesirable items as well, which were not accepted by any of the gods of demons, one such thing is Poison. This poison could have ended the whole world. For saving the world from this poison, Lord Shiva drank it and accumulated it in the throat. The color of his neck turned blue, giving him the name Neelkantha.
During Shravan Shivratri, all the celebrations/pujas are performed in the night. People seeking moksha or mukti from their sins pray to Lord Shiva on this holy day.
