Rohini vrat fasting is a very important observance for the devotees in Jain community. This vrat is observed by the Jain women seeking the long life of their husbands. Rohini is an important one among the twenty-seven Nakshatras in the Hindu as well as Jain calendars.
Rohini fasting is observed on the day when the Rohini Nakshatra stays after sunrise. After a day-long fast, the fasting concludes during the Margashirsha Nakshatra that starts after the end of Rohini Nakshatra.
Rohini Vrat procedure
In a year, there are twelve Rohini fasting days in total. Generally, Rohini fasting is observed for three years, or five years or seven years continuously. Nevertheless, the ideal duration of the Rohini fasting recommended for the Jain women is five years and five months.
What is done on Rohini Vrat?
On the days of Rohini vrat, the women observing the fast take bath early in the morning and set up the altar with an idol or picture of Vasupujya, one of the twenty four Tirtankaras of Jainism. After the puja, the fasting starts and stretches for the whole day till the beginning of the next Nakshatra.
Benefits of Rohini vrat
Since the women in the Jain household cannot observe strict austerities, this form of vrat helps them observe some milder kind of spiritual sadhana.
The vrat is said to confer long life and health for the husband and the other family members.
This vrat can also promote harmony and peace in families and enhance the bond between husband and wife.
