Pausha Putrada Ekadashi
Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is an important one among the twenty four Ekadashis observed in a year. The term Pausha refers to the Pausha month (December January) when this event falls). The term ‘Putrada’ in Sanskrit means the giver of sons. Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is believed to give male offspring to the observer and hence the name Pausha Putrada Ekadashi applies to this Ekadashi. Mainly this Ekadashi is fervently observed by the couple which seeks male offspring in the family.
What to do on Pausha Putrada Ekadashi
On the day of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, those seeking male baby in the family are enjoined too fast for the whole day. Both husband and wife abstain from food and water and spend in the puja of Lord Vishnu. Chanting Vishnu Sahasranam and Vishnu Slokas and songs on this day is considered highly auspicious. For those who cannot observe a rigorous fast, a partial fast is also advised that permits taking water, milk and fruits. The fast is concluded on the next day of Dwadashi during the Parana period.
Significance of Pusha Putrada Ekadashi
Among the twenty four Ekadashi that come in a year, only two Ekadashis are said to be auspicious for the couple seeking male children. Along with Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, the other one that is recommended for childless couple is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi observed in the Shravan month (July – August). This Ekadashi vrat is also believed to bless the families with the welfare and long life of the children. Hence people fast on this Ekadashi with great devotion and enthusiasm.
