Durgashtami is also pronounced as Durga Ashtami. The day of Durga Ashtami is dedicated to worshipping Mother Durga who incarnated to annihilate the evil forces and protect the virtuous. Month after month, Durga Ashtami falls on the eighth day of Shukla Paksha (bright half of lunar month). Monthly Durgashtami is called as Masik Durgashtami, while the Maha Durgashtami falls on the Shukla Paksha Ashtami during the Navratri or Dussehra festival.
