Kamada Ekadashi

Kamada Ekadashi falls in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March – April) on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon). Notably, this is the first Ekadashi Vrat in the Hindu calendar that comes after the dawn of New Year.

Significance of Kamada Ekadashi vrat

Since Kamada Ekadashi falls after Navratri celebrations, this is also called by the name Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi. The word Kamada means fulfilment of desires. This Ekadashi vrat is said to fulfill the desires of the devotees and hence it is called by this name. The essence of this Ekadashi vrat is to express one’s devotion to Lord Vishnu through fasting, prayers, puja and charitable activities. All the activities done on the day are intended to purify the hearts of the devotees and encourage purity and steadfastness.

How to observe Kamada Ekadashi fast

If you are able to observe the Ekadashi vrat, you are a fortunate soul. Ekadashi fast is said to be the most efficacious one among all the fasting procedures we can think of. It wins the blessings of Lord Vishnu and makes the individuals prosper in their earthly as well as heavenly life after death. Those fasting on Ekadashis need to commence the fasting on the morning of Ekadashi day and conclude it on the Dwadashi day during the Parana time. If you are observing a complete fast, you must not take even water during the fasting period. If you prefer a partial fast, you are allowed to take milk and fruits to spend the fasting period.
