The other names of Kalashtami are Kala Ashtami and Bhairava Ashtami. Every month, Kalshtami is observed on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami (eighth day of the waning half of lunar month). This day is dedicated to worshipping Lord Kala Bhairav as the day marks the time when Lord Kalabhairav manifested in this form. Devotees of Lord Kala Bhairav observe fasting for the whole day and engage themselves in Kala Bhairav Puja on the day of Kalashtami.
Monthly and Annual Kalashtamis
The Kalashtami occurring on the Krishnapaksha Ashtami of every month is known as Masik or monthly Kalashtami. Some devotees observe fast on the Kalashtamis of all months. The Kalshtami falling in the month of Marghasirsha (North Indian calendar) or the month of Karthik (South Indian calendar) is known as Kala Bhairav Jayanti or Maha Kalshtami. Though the months differ due to the difference in calculation, both the North India and South Indian calendars observe Maha Kalashtami on the same day. It was on the day of Kala Bhairav Jayanti that Lord Shiva incarnated as Kala Bhairav.
