Called as Vaisakhi or Baisakhi, this is a very popular historical as well as religious festival for the Hindus and Sikhs. This is also deemed as the spring time harvest festival. This day marks the New Year day for the Sikh community. Year on year, Baisakhi falls on 13th or 14th of April.

Baisakhi is the most popular event in Punjab. This very famous event is celebrated with a great excitement and fanfare in this state. This is the time when the Rabi crop is just ready for harvest. Around three hundred years back, it was on this day that the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa Panth cult.
What is done on Baisakhi
Massive celebrations of different kinds are organized on the Baisakhi day. People participate in these celebrations and also delightfully eat a lot of delicacies prepared in homes. Dances, stage-shows and some fun events at gatherings are very common on this day in Punjab.
Sikhs visit the Gurdwaras and distribute Kada Prasad among friends and families. Religious processions are held under the leadership of Panj Piaras or the five religious men. Reading of Guru Granth Sahib, reciting traditional songs and Kirtans, and performing Kar Sewa (helping with the various chores at the Gurdwaras) are the most popular activities on the Baisakhi day.
On this day, the schools, colleges, businesses and offices remain closed. Friends and relatives come together and exchange gifts and sweets. Shops offer huge discounts on all items and hence there is a hectic shopping activity around this time.
