The other popular name of Akshaya Tritiya is Akha Teej. This very auspicious day falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha (waxing lunar phase) in the month of Vaishaka (April – May). This day is believed to be one of the luckiest days to start something new, buy gold and utensils, register property related deeds and other acts of importance. As per astronomy, the sun and moon are at their brightest on this day. If Akshaya Tritiya coincides with Rohini Nakshatra, it is all the more auspicious.

The word Akshaya means never ending or never depleting. Those that are started on this day can last forever with growth and development assured. In a year, on the two auspicious days namely Akshaya Tritiya and Vijayadasami, there is no need to see good Muhurat for starting something since the whole of these days are very auspicious completely free of any malefic effects.

The gold purchased on this day is said to grow. On this day Kuber, the Lord of wealth obtained the riches by praying Lord Shiva. Hence buying gold and worshipping him on this day is said to please him and win his blessings. On this day, people perform special pujas at home for prosperity. The important activities done on this day are reading Vishnu Sahasranam, puja to Lord Vishnu and Tulsi puja. Also, it is highly meritorious to give charity on this day. Most importantly, people donate wheat and rice on this day to the poor to win the favor of Indra, the king of gods.
