The divine mothers: Goddess Lakshmi & Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati need no introduction in our lives. It is believed that Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge. It is also said that both of them do not reside at the same place together at the same point of time.

It is very interesting to note that the influence of Saraswati emerges well before the influence of Lakshmi in an individual’ life as education precedes the time period to start earning. In contradiction, it can also be said In case of leading businessmen and rich people it has been observed that they may not be educated at all but they amass staggering figures of wealth in their lives. In case of a singer Saraswati prevails well before the influence of Lakshmi. As a matter of fact Saraswati becomes the source of Lakshmi for him..

The idea of this article is to clarify the close relationship of these deities to each other and their positive influences in our lives. There are no such conflicting tendencies among the two deities. Both them represent the same root power known as SHRI ADISHAKTI. A root power assuming two different forms cannot be conflicting to each other. There are so many educationally qualified individuals who are jobless yet there are some who have a job without actual qualification.

Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in eight forms known as the Ashta Lakshmi. One of the forms is known as Vidya Lakshmi. If these two deities were in conflict then one would have never become the source of gaining the other. Further, the stuti dedicated to these two deities has one word in common. The word “BHAGWATI” has been included in both the mantra.

Goddess Lakshmi stuti

सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते धवलतरांशुक गन्धमाल्यशोभे ।
भगवति हरिवल्लभे मनोज्ञे त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम् ॥

Goddess Saraswati stuti

The word Bhagwati means one who represents the complete embodiment of divinity and sources of luxuries. This word has been referred for Lakshmi as well as Saraswati. It is disheartening to understand that Goddess Saraswati finds a place as an idol only in educational institutions and nowhere else.
Remember the very power of speech to the humanity is a pure gift by Goddess Saraswati. Talk, conversation, negotiation, oratory, poetry, singing etc are achieved by the blessings of Goddess Saraswati.

It is wise to treat both these deities at par and seek their blessings in such a manner that one becomes the source for the other. Biasness/partiality to a particular form would inhibit materialistic as well as spiritual growth.

As for children, teach them the significance of Goddess Saraswati so that her blessings become the source for entry of Goddess Lakshmi in their lives.
