Papmochani Ekadashi 2018: The Most Powerful Fasting That Removes Sins
While there are twenty four Ekadashis in a year, Papmochani Ekadashi is which falls on the Ekadashi (eleventh day) of Krishnapaksha (waning phase of moon) during the month of Phalgun (March – April). It is said that the vrat and puja on this day can deliver the devotees from all their sins and therefore the name Papmochani Ekadashi.
Papmochani Ekadashi 2018 Puja vidhi
The devotee observing the vrat should wake up early in the morning of Papmochani Ekadashi and take a holy bath. The altar is set up and the picture of Lord Vishnu is installed and decorated. Puja is offered with sixteen types of offerings and the mantras of Lord Vishnu and sacred chants like Vishnu Sahasranam are recited. The puja is repeated once again on the next day of Dwadashi.
Papmochani Ekadashi 2018 Fasting rules
Fasting starts on the Ekadashi morning and lasts till Parana (the time to conclude the fast) on the Dwadashi day (the next day of Ekadashi). The fasting is ended after puja to Lord Vishnu and taking tulsi water. The stricter form of vrat prohibits taking food and water. The milder form of vrat allows taking fruits and milk.

Medhvi was the son of Chyavana rishi. Medhvi had a very attractive physique and was deeply engaged in a life of penance. Nothing on the earth would be able to distract him from his deep meditation. As usual, Indra, the king of gods considered him as a challenge to his supremacy as such a deep penance could win Medhvi a high place in heaven. Therefore Indra sent several beautiful damsels to disturb his meditation. However, none of them could even near him due to the power of his penance. A beautiful damsel among them called as Manjugosha set up a hermitage near Medhvi’s ashram and started singing in her sweet voice. As days passed, Medhvi was slowly drawn towards her. One find day, Manmata, the cupid shot his arrows of love on Medhvi which finally made Medhvi fall for the lady.
The fall and escape
Totally forgetting himself, Medhvi was engrossed in admiring the beauty of Manjugosha. Little he realized that several decades had passed without his knowledge. Once, Manjugosha wished to free herself from the rishi and expressed her need to go to her parents. Medhvi asked her to stay at least till dusk. Manjugosha replied that she had already stayed for several thousands of dusks. Gaining his senses, Medhvi realized he had been cheated and misguided by her out of his life of penance. In a fit of anger and disappointment, he cursed that Manjugosha turn into a dreadful looking witch. Later, Medhvi approached his father Chyavana and narrated all that happened to him. Chyavana advised Medvi and also Manjugosha independently to observe the fasting of Papmochani Ekadashi and win back their lost glorious states.
