The eighth day of Navratri Puja falls on Maha Ashtami Tithi (eighth day of the waxing phase of moon) in the month of Ashvin (September – October).

Goddess Maa Mahagauri Devi (Navratri 8th Day)

On the eighth day of Navratri, Ma Mahagauri is worshipped. Mahagauri is always in her sixteenth year. The term Gauri signifies that she is the daughter of Giri or mountain. She rides on a bull holding a trident in her hands along with a damaru. She wears white clothes and her face is resplendent like that of a cool moon showering benign blessings on her devotees.

Story of Ma Mahagauri

Once, Ma Durga had taken birth on the earth and wished to get back to her divine abode by marrying Lord Shiva. Therefore, as advised by sage Narad, she undertook a severe penance to please Lord Shiva. As she was totally immersed in the penance, her body was covered by dust and dirt. She forgot all about eating or drinking anything and continued her severe meditation. The scorching heat of the sun blackened her body and she thus remained for thousands of years. Lord Shiva was highly pleased with her devotion and he showered the Ganges on her body making her shine so brilliant and glorious like a white saphatik (crystal). The form of Mahagauri is thus effulgent, white and very pleasing to meditate on.

Ma Mahagauri puja importance

She removes all the afflictions caused by the unfavorable position of Rahu in horoscope and blesses the devotees with material prosperity and spiritual attainments.
